FictionPad gives you a couple of ways to stay up-to-date with what other users are doing — following and lists.

What is following?

On FictionPad you can “follow” almost anything — stories, authors, discussions, etc.

When you follow something it means you will be notified when something happens to the thing you are following. For example, if you follow a story, you will be notified when that story is updated. If you follow an author, you will be notified when that author publishes a new story or updates her blog.

What are lists?

A list is a collection of related items. For example, you may have a My Favorites list of your favorite stories or authors. You can create as many lists as you like and add as many items to the lists as needed.

Not only do lists help you find and organize things, they are also a great way to share FictionPad content with others. The lists you create on FictionPad can easily be shared on Facebook or Twitter, emailed to others and embedded on other sites. For more information, see Embedding Lists on Other Websites.

What’s the difference between following and lists?

There are two primary differences between following something on FictionPad and adding it to a list:

  • Follow something if you want to receive a notification when that thing changes. For example, follow a story if you want to be notified when the story is updated.

  • Add something to a list if you want to easily find it later or share it with others. For example, you might want to create a To Read list for stories you want to read later. Or, create a Great Sci-Fi Stories list with your favorite science fiction stories and embed that list on your blog.

In many cases, you will both follow something and add it to a list.

How do I follow something or add it to a list?

A “Favorite Button” will typically appear in the upper-right corner of things you can follow or add to lists. The Favorite Button will always have a icon and may also have the word “Favorite” if there’s enough room. The Favorite Button changes colors so you can easily tell if you are following the item or have it in a list:

  • or - You are not following the item and have not added it to a list

  • or - You are either following the item or it’s in one of your lists

Public vs. private

When you follow something or add it to a list, you can do so either publicly or privately. If do it publicly, other people can see what you’ve done. If you do it privately, only you can see that you are following it or have added it to a list. The exception to this rule occurs when you privately follow or add to a private list a story or another user. In these cases, the story’s author or the other user will be notified that you are following them or have added them to a list but they will not be able to see your private lists or who else you are following privately.

How am I notified when something happens to something I follow?

There are two ways FictionPad lets you know when something you are following has changed:

  • Your What’s New page will have an entry for the change.

  • If your notification settings allow it, you will also receive an email about the change. To update your notification settings, press the Notifications button on the What’s New page.

How do I stop following something or remove it from a list?

To stop following something, simply press the Favorite Button again and choose Do not Follow or uncheck the box next to the list from which you want the item removed.

Where can I find my lists and what I’m following?

To see a list of things you are following, click your name in the upper-right corner of the site and choose Things You’re Following or Your Lists from the menu that appears:
User Menu

How do I know who is following me and which lists I’m in?

You will receive a notification whenever someone follows you or adds you to a list. To see a list of people following you, click your name in the upper-right corner of the site and choose XX Followers or XX Listers from the menu that appears.

How do I know who is following my story or has added it to a list?

You will receive a notification whenever someone follows one of your stories or adds it to a list. To see everyone who is following your story or has added it to a list:

  1. Open the story

  2. Choose Followers or Listers from the menu on the left side of the page
